HOME  >  CURRENT STOCK  >  DOBAG Rugs and Carpets

The DOBAG project is still alive although the annual production is a mere fraction of that of its peak in the 1990's. Many alternative, more lucrative sources for income in dairy produce and agriculture are now available to the villagers in preference to the time-consuming weaving. As older weavers retire very few young women join and so the future for the project is uncertain. After our successful sale in the run-up to the closure of the retail outlet most DOBAGs sold so the current stock is very small - the runner section contains a few DOBAG runners. This section updated 27/8/2010.

DOBAG rug, # 8687
Hand knotted by the family of Sultan Uslu, Sariahmetli village, Yunt Dag, west Turkey, in 2009. Size 146x124 cms, 4'10"x4'1" excl kilims.

This field design is known as "vazo selvi", known from early examples from nearby weaving centres like Bergama. Although fairly formal the rug contains enough spontaneity to make it work with a nice handle of the open field and compact borders. Signed S.U. and dated 2009.

DOBAG rug, # 8696
Hand knotted by Muzeyyen Topal, Camtepe village, Ayvacik region, NW Turkey, in 2010. Size 154x99 cms, 5'1"x3'3" excl kilims.

The large arrow motif (oklu) featured here is found in west Anatolian village rugs going back many centuries and is known to several villages in the Ayvacik region. Strong and bold but with lovely, soft shades of sky blue and apricot yellow against the warm madder red. Signed M.T.

DOBAG carpet, # 4254
Hand knotted by Katriye Celen, Orselli village, Yunt Dag, West Turkey, in 1995. Size 272x200 cms, 8'11"x6'6", excl kilims.

This beautiful DOBAG carpet, now 14 years old having been given plenty of sheen-inducing wear and patination, still retains a totally full pile of glossy wool. It is a great example of what DOBAGs were like in their peak period; such pieces are no longer available other than by special order which can take anything up to 2 years. The design, locally known as "Holbein" after the Flemish painter whose works often included similar rugs as backdrops, works really well here, each form given its own quirky touches. No less than four signatures are found in the carpet, all with the C for Celen, showing that this was a real family enterprise that probably took them 5-7 months to complete. It also has the date 1995 woven into it.

DOBAG carpet, No 8613
Hand knotted by Cennet Deneri and her family, Orselli village, Yunt Dag, W Turkey. Size 345x274 cms, 11'4"x9' excl kilims.

We have waited almost 2 years for this carpet and it has finally arrived together with 14 other DOBAG pieces also ordered a long time ago. This large carpet, containing around 815000 hand tied knots, is a most impressive piece of work, with superb balance, proportions and colour harmony. Cennet is one of the most experienced weavers in DOBAG and she has signed and dated it 2008. A wonderful carpet, unique in the world, set to last for generations.
